Grade my SAT essay? 1-6?

Sometimes it is necessary to challenge what people in authority claim to be true. Although some respect for authority is, no doubt, necessary in order for any group or organization to function, questioning the people in charge-even if they are experts or leaders in their fields-makes us better thinkers. It forces all concerned to defend old ideas and decisions and to consider new ones. Sometimes it can even correct old errors in thought and put an end to wrong actions.Assignment: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations. Although authority should not usually be challenged, in certain cases, it should be. Imagine that you were told only to sit on the back of the bus, or that only your husband may vote. Would you give your consent? Would you be belligerent? Women's suffrage, African American rights, even Lord of the Flies- these all show good reasons for challenging authority. America is a country that has proclaimed equality from the start. Yet women and African Americans did not have nearly as many rights as white men, even over a hundred years ago! Slavery gave way to discrimination. "Colored" (an euphemism for a much ruder word) people had to go to different schools, drink from different water fountains, sit on the back of the bus... Many fought back- such as Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat for a white man. Women's suffrage was also important. Were women really inferior to men? No then why would the law imply it? Women fought back, just as blacks did- and ended up with an amendment. Another example is the famous book by William Golding- Lord of the Flies, a tale of a group of boys stranded on an island. This story illustrates human nature and society. Though Ralph and Piggy were told by Jack (the new leader of the boys) to help hunt, they knew fire was more important, and in the end, they were the main reason for their rescue. On the other hand, challenging authority isn't always the right choice. In Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Pa tells Laura not to let their dog loose. When the dangerous Indians come, Laura obeys her father and keeps their dog tied up. If she had let him loose, he would have bitten the Indians, who then would have harmed them. A healthy respect for authority is important, but so is the ability to challenge it.

One Answer to “Grade my SAT essay? 1-6?”

  1. galanis says:

I cannot give a grade on this essay because I am not an SAT reader. What I can say is that every essay needs to, at a minimum, have an intro with thesis, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. In terms of meeting these requirements, your intro is lacking a thesis that answers the prompt. There needs to be a clear statement of agreement or disagreement with the prompt and 3 reasons that support your position. Those 3 reasons are then explained in the next 3 paragraphs, 1 supporting reason per paragraph. You also want to be sure to transition between paragraphs; your ideas should flow from one to the other. Your last paragraph should summarize your supporting reasons and restate your thesis. Outside of structure, be careful with grammar and point of view, and subject-verb agreement. In a formal essay, you want to avoid using first and second person pronouns such as “I, You, We, My, Your, You’re, Yours, and Ours.” Try to avoid ending sentences in prepositions such as “it.” You can google prepositions. I would suggest creating a brief outline before you write, because it will help you organize the information that you want to put into your essay and let you know which areas are lacking and which areas are strong.
